Learning to read and write a language is vital to truly being able to communicate in that language, and so it is for music. Being able to perform a piece without any knowledge of music theory is akin to being able to speak in a language but not read or write it. Hence the old music saying – ‘he’s a singer not a musician’ – as a higher percentage of singers lack the knowledge to read music compared to those playing other instruments.
All major music conservatories/curriculum providers have theory co-requisites for playing exams above the grade 4 level and they are also required when applying to the provincial department of Education for high school credits for Private Music Study. (Please click on links below for specific requirements for both Conservatory Canada and the Royal Conservatory of Music and Alberta Ed.) Our group theory classes generally run October to May, are sequential in nature, and are suitable for students aged 9+. Private theory lessons are available for those preferring to study one to one. NOTE Registration and payment for exams are the responsibility of the student and not included in the cost of a class.
